This project explores the adaptive reuse of 32 Lincoln’s Inn Fields formerly part of the Royal College of Surgeons into the Firoz Lalji Global Hub at LSE, a future home for African studies and global citizenship.
Responding to feedback that the LSE campus often feels offical, formal, and lacking emotional connection, our design reclaims construction waste (specifically mineral wool) from the renovation to create a modular “social island.” Inspired by African materials, textures, colours, and sound culture, the design integrates flowing water, patterned leaves, and bell-like tones from repurposed nut shells. It encourages informal encounters, shared care, and sensory engagement, transforming passive space into one of connection.
By transforming discarded materials into a sensory and social experience, the project supports LSE’s vision for a more human, culturally rich, and sustainable campus environment.
