Perch & Pine

Individual Work
4th February 2025 - 10th March 2025

A modular, biodegradable pinecone tiered feeding tray for pet birds, using natural antibacterial and compostable materials to create a dynamic space and reconnecting domestic birds with nature through safe foraging and intuitive exploration.

Reconnecting Birds, Humans, and Nature
In caring for them, we risk isolating them from the very environment that shaped them. Perch & Pine challenges the artificial boundaries that separate indoor birds from their natural world, replacing those cold, synthetic materials with a sensory experience they were meant to have.
Starting with What Nature Provides
Each year, millions of pine cones fall to the ground, making them a plentiful organic byproduct of forest ecosystems. What the wild leaves behind is exactly what captive birds crave. This natural material brings familiar forest textures indoors, satisfying their innate urge to chew and forage.
Rigorous Material Development
To transform raw pine cones into a durable product, Perch & Pine didn't just craft; we engineered. Our material went through a meticulous process of sterilization, grinding, and blending in the lab to ensure professional-grade performance and consistency.
Through hundreds of formula trials, we successfully developed a stable bio-composite from upcycled pine cones. We combined exclusively food-grade, natural antibacterial agents with biodegradable binders to create a material that is both eco-friendly and safe for animals.
From Lab Trials to Precision Production
Evolving from initial casting to precision CNC milling. Perch & Pine resolved early material challenges to ensure maximum durability, flawless assembly, and consistent production stability.
Bridging Habitat and Habit
Perch & Pine transforms domestic care into a dynamic, evolving environment. Featuring a highly adaptable and reconfigurable design, the system allows keepers to assemble, adjust, and expand the habitat to match their bird's changing behaviors, preventing sensory habituation and boredom. By blending natural wilderness textures with modern aesthetics, it invites birds to forage naturally while integrating seamlessly into the human home.
